Stress simulation in Perth

Element Mechanical Design runs finite element analysis on complex components, machine assemblies and industrial equipment for clients across WA. We simulate real-world loads, stresses and thermal conditions on your design before manufacture begins — so you fix problems in software, not on the workshop floor.

Finite Element Analysis at Element Mechanical Design Perth

Most structural failures are predictable. FEA predicts them.

Every component that fractures in service, every weld that cracks under load, every shaft that deflects more than the drawing allows — most of them could have been caught with a simulation. The loads were known. The geometry was there. Nobody ran the simulation.

We run the simulations.

Our FEA service covers static structural analysis, vibration, thermal performance, fatigue life and buckling. And we deliver results that are useful, not just impresive-looking stress plots with no interpretation. We tell you what failed, why it failed and what to change to fix it.

It’s interesting when people bring in a design that has broken and want to fix it in a way that prevents future breakage. Half the time I can see it in the drawing. The stress concentration is right there. FEA makes that visible before the part exists.

What We Simulate

Types of finite element analysis we run

Static structural analysis

We apply real-world loads — forces, pressures, weights and moments — to your 3D model and calculate stress, deformation and factor of safety throughout the structure. This is the most common starting point for any FEA engagement.

Modal and frequency analysis

We identify the natural frequencies and mode shapes of your design to determine whether operating speeds or external excitation sources will drive resonance. Resonance failures are expensive. We find them before they find you.

Thermal analysis

We model heat generation, conduction, convection and radiation through your component or assembly. We use thermal FEA to identify hotspots, validate cooling system performance and check that materials stay within their rated temperature ranges.

Fatigue and cyclic loading analysis

We calculate fatigue life under repeated load cycles using S-N curve data for your specified material. This is particularly relevant for mining and materials handling equipment that operates continuously under fluctuating loads.

Nonlinear analysis

We handle large deformations, contact problems, material plasticity and geometric nonlinearity — the cases where simple linear analysis gives you the wrong answer. Rubber components, press-fit assemblies and post-yield behaviour all fall into this category.

Buckling analysis

We calculate the critical load at which a slender structure will buckle and collapse. Structural frames, columns and thin-walled pressure components all require buckling checks as part of a complete structural assessment.

Why choose Element Mechanical Design for FEA in Perth

Results you can act on
We deliver findings as engineering decisions, not raw data. Every report identifies whether the design passes, what the margin is and what to change if it does not.

Mining-specific experience
We understand the load cases, impact factors and fatigue spectra relevant to WA mining and bulk handling equipment — not just the textbook cases.

Connected to CAD and certification
Your FEA runs on the geometry we built. The results feed directly into your certification documentation. No rebuilding, no translation, no rework.

Certification-ready reports
We structure our simulation reports for design verifiers and approval authorities. If you need to register a design with WorkSafe WA or DMIRS, our reports carry the evidence they require.

Local engineers
You work directly with the engineer who ran the analysis. If something needs explaining or the design changes, you call us — not a help desk.

FEA Connected to CAD

When your FEA analysis starts from a CAD model we built, there is no geometry rebuild step. We mesh directly from the same model used for design, which means the analysis geometry matches the actual part. Without doubt, this results in a more accurate simulation than a simplified reconstruction from a different engineer’s interpretation.

No geometry rebuild. No file translation.

For clients who supply their own geometry, we import STEP, IGES, Parasolid and native SolidWorks and Inventor files. We flag any geometry issues that affect mesh quality before the analysis begins, not after we have already invoiced for a broken run.

See Computer Aided Design (CAD) for the full CAD service.

What you receive at the end of an FEA engagement

We deliver more than stress plots. Every FEA engagement produces:

  • A written simulation report covering the analysis methodology, load cases, boundary conditions, material properties, mesh details and results
  • Stress and deformation plots at the critical load cases, annotated to highlight areas of concern
  • Factor of safety summary for each load case, referenced to the applicable standard or client specification
  • Design recommendations — specific, actionable changes if the analysis identifies a problem, not generic suggestions to “review the design”
  • Native simulation files on request, so a future engineer can verify or extend the analysis without starting from scratch

We do not deliver a PDF with no interpretation and leave you to figure out what it means.

FEA for Mining Equipment Perth

Mining equipment operates under harsh, continuous loading conditions that push materials and weld joints to their limits. Unplanned failures on a mine site cost far more than a simulation. Not only in downtime and maintenance callouts but also the potential risk to life.

Structural simulation for WA mining and resources

We run FEA on mining and bulk handling equipment including:

  • Conveyor frames, idler brackets and transfer chute structures
  • Crusher and screen support frames
  • Pressure vessels, tanks and process equipment
  • Underground mobile equipment structural components
  • Lifting frames, spreader beams and material handling attachments
  • Structural supports for fixed plant

We understand the load cases relevant to WA mining operations and apply appropriate dynamic load factors, impact allowances and fatigue spectra to the analysis. Because of this, our simulation reports carry the detail required for DMIRS plant design registration where applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions — FEA Perth

FEA in general

What is finite element analysis?

FEA is a numerical method that divides a structure into thousands of small elements, solves the governing equations across all of them simultaneously and produces a map of how stress, deformation, temperature or vibration distributes through the part under a given set of conditions. It’s needed when loads are complex enough that hand calculations give you an answer you cannot trust, when a failure would be costly or dangerous, or when a certifying body requires simulation evidence as part of a design registration.

Do you need my CAD files to run FEA?

We need some form of geometry. This could be either a 3D CAD model, a drawing we can model from, or files in STEP, IGES, Parasolid or native SolidWorks/Inventor format. The better the geometry, the more accurate the analysis. If you only have 2D drawings, we can build the 3D model as part of the engagement. See Computer Aided Design (CAD).

How accurate is FEA?

FEA accuracy depends on the quality of the inputs: geometry, loads, boundary conditions and material properties. A well-constructed FEA model run by an experienced engineer is highly accurate for most structural, thermal and dynamic applications. We include a mesh convergence study on all certification-grade work to verify that the result is not sensitive to mesh density. We also document our assumptions clearly so you know what the analysis covers and what it does not.

FEA from Element Mechanical Design

Can you run FEA for certification and design registration in WA?

Yes. We produce FEA evidence packages structured to meet the requirements of WorkSafe WA, DMIRS and other relevant approval authorities for classified plant, pressure equipment and lifting gear. This includes documented load cases, mesh convergence studies, material property references and a report format a design verifier can assess. See our Certification Compliance page for the full process.

Can FEA replace physical testing?

For many applications, yes. Regulatory bodies in Australia increasingly accept FEA as primary evidence of structural adequacy for pressure equipment, lifting gear and classified plant. For fatigue and dynamic applications, physical testing of a representative prototype is sometimes still required to validate material behaviour. We will tell you upfront whether testing is likely to be required for your specific application and certification path.
